NATUROID’s take:

There are so many natural skincare brands in India but when it comes to natural/toxic free make up brands, the options are very few. Soultree is a BDIH certified natural cosmetic brand that has a make up line with a lovely choice of shades of lipstick, lip gloss, Kajal, Mascara & BB cream specially designed to suit Indian skin tones.

One thing I’m worried about these days is most natural brands be it skincare or make up, almost get it right with mostly safer main ingredients but widely use synthetic colors & fragrances for added attraction which is undesirable. Consumers brush it aside as a minor concern but in reality artificial colors & fragrances from synthetic dyes, phthalates, etc are equally bad or worse than a Sulphate or Paraben. That way Soultree seems to be safer as it claims to be free of any synthetic fragrance, colors, preservatives, lead & Paraben.

I recently got to try Soultree’s 16 miniature lipsticks & liked the way it glided super smooth on the lips and kept it moisturised for long. Not to mention that I loved most of the shades as they suited my medium tan warm undertone really well. Soultree’s ayurvedic lipstick formulation is primarily based on organic ghee for its healing, moisturising and lightening effects, wild honey for softening and sweet almond for revitalising and nourishment.

Keep reading to know my detailed take on the same!

Packaging: The ones I used were the miniature versions that came in small black plastic tubes with a transparent lid. They were easy to use & no complaints here. The regular ones come in a classy metallic golden & brown bullet packaging.

Texture: It has a soft, creamy & smooth texture that gently glides on the lips.

Fragrance: All the shades smell almost the same. The fragrance is sweet, pleasant & not so strong. It should be majorly from Rose oil.

My skintone : medium tan with warm undertone.

Ingredients Analysis:

Butyrum (ghee/clarified butter) – moisturises, hydrates, brightens, slows down aging & cures chapped lips.

Ricinus communis (castor) oil – heals inflammations, fights aging, moisturises, fades blemishes & reduces pigmentation

Isoamyl laurate – This is a conditioning agent which is an Ester of isoamyl alcohol & Laurie acid.

Sorbitan olivate – This is a surfactant based on olive oil & sorbitol.

Prunus dulcis (almond) oil – Lightens pigmented lips, moisturises, heals chapped lips, removes tan & reduces signs of aging.

Euphoribia cerifera (candelilla) cera – It is wax which is a multifunctional complex of natural wax eaters derived from the waxy leaf structure of candelilla shrubs. It increases the residence time of natural emollients on the skin and helps provide a protective, moisture resistant environment for skin.

Copernicia cerifera (carnuba) cera – A wax derived from the tropical palm tree copernicia cerifera. It helps increasing the viscosity of a solution, imparts emollience and used to thicken the portion of stick products like chapstick or lipstick, working to give them structure & solidify them. It also helps to stiffen the formulation, providing flexibility and plasticity that facilitates easy application,

Cera alba (beeswax) – A wax obtained from the secretion of glands on the sides of the bodies by honey bees. Even after processing, it continues to be biologically active and retains its antibacterial capability and used as a thickening agent. It is used as an antiseptic that soothes, hydrates, heals and facilitates skin cell development.

Theobroma cacao (cocoa) butter – It is high in antioxidants and blocks harmful free radicals in the body. It prevents premature aging, reduces inflammation, moisturises well, rich in vitamin C & magnesium that is great for skin.

Coco-caprylate/caprate – It is derived from coconut oil and is responsible for a silky feeling. It provides hydration, spreadability & lovely slip.

Tocopherol/ Vitamin E – It is rich in antioxidants and helps in anti aging, sun damage, cell growth. It moisturises, soothes & heals dryness, chapped lips,

Rosa damascena (rose) oil – Rose oil(unlike rose essential oil which is prepared using steam distillation) is produced using a solvent extraction method. The resulting scent is stronger, which is why it is used in perfume industry. Here, it is used for fragrance purpose.

Cetyl palmitate – The Palmitates are esters of palmitic acid and ethylhexyl, cetyl or isopropyl alcohol . In cosmetics and personal care products, they all function as skin conditioning agents – emollient. The Palmitates are efficient opacifiers in cream and lotion shampoos. Isopropyl Palmitate also functions as a binder .

Parfum – Fragrance from essential oils.

Limonene – Limonene is a scent ingredient and solvent naturally ocurring in the rind of citrus fruit. Upon storage and exposure to sunlight and air, limonene degrades to various oxidation products which act as skin and respiratory irritants and sensitizers.

Linalool – It is a naturally occurring terpene found in many flowers and spices including lavender and coriander. It gives off a complex yet delicate floral aroma, and while its effects are myriad, it is in particular one of the substances used most widely to reduce stress.

Geraniol – It is a naturally occurring scent ingredient found in various essential oils like rose & citronella oil.

Citronellol – It is a naturally occurring scent ingredient derived from rose, geranium and lemongrass.

May Contain + or – CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499, CI 77742, CI 77019, CI 77891, CI 77007 – These are source of colors from mica, minerals & iron oxides.

Efficiency: The application is super easy as it smoothly glides on the lips like a charm. The colour pay off is great in single swipe, so there is no need to work hard in building up color. The finish is either glossy, buttery, satin or metallic depending on the choice of shades(check pics above). None of them seem matte though. Most colors give an opaque coverage and works great on even the darkest pigmented lips. The lipstick gives a good moisturisation by itself(shud be the ghee’s job😀) and I don feel the need to apply a lip balm beneath the same. This isn’t a waterproof formulation, hence we can’t expect the same to be transferproof. It stays for 4-5 hours with light snacking & drinking. If one licks, sips or eats a full meal, it transfers and reapplication may be required. After 5 hours, the finish starts wearing out with obvious decrease in color intensity, however it leaves behind a light tint. It does settle in fine lines but doesn’t show much, feather or bleed. For a smooth finish, exfoliating before lipstick application is ideal. As it is not waterproof, removal is easy too. A water or coconut oil dipped cotton does the job in a minute.

When it comes to lipsticks, choosing the shade online is a challenge. Sin India is a land of different skin colors, It will be great if the brand displays swatches of the shades on different skin tones. Hence, trying swatches in person is the best way to buy appropriate shades. However, with reasonable guesses & previous experience, you can try choosing shades online at your own risk.

  • desired color pay off in single swipe
  • great coverage even for pigmented lips
  • travel friendly packaging
