MY TAKE:

Ketchup is one thing we are so used to these days in our fast forward lifestyle, as an add on for so many dishes. The commercial ketchups available in the market namely Maggi, Kissan, etc. have so many undesirable additives and do more harm than good. I recently got to try I SAY ORGANIC’s organic tomato ketchup which is free of any harmful additives. Having said that, I also don’t deny the fact that making a tomato ketchup at home is not a herculean task and consuming freshly cooked food is the healthiest choice, any day, over buying packaged preserved food but also practically speaking, for the ones who aren’t ready for the same, not in a position to cook or take that extra effort for various reasons namely demanding lifestyle, staying in a PG, traveling or used to packaged food, etc., a readymade, organically sourced, additives free healthy ketchup will sure help in the transition phase to clean eating. I feel baby steps matter and step by step progress is the way to go!

When it comes to organic food, certification is important according to me but I say organic claims the following:

“Currently, I Say Organic sources regularly from three farmer groups and two independent farmers. Our partners are certified by accredited agencies and their certifications are mentioned. All I Say Organic produce can be identified under the I Say Organic Seal of Trust sourced under the I Say Organic network of farmers. Off and on, there are also other groups we source certain specialty items from. Certificates for those can be made available on request, or if the produce is non-certified it will be explicitly stated (but farmer info can be shared on request)”

Though I’m a bit sceptical to go ahead without certification when it comes to ‘organic’ produce, the above claim sounded convincing along with a background check on the brand with customers and natives of Delhi where they are placed. Also, I cudnt find any certified organic brand selling items like ketchup, etc. Hence decided to give it a shot.

Following is my take on the same on I SAY ORGANIC’s tomato ketchup.

Packaging: It comes in a sleek glass bottle with a metal cap. Kudos to the ecofriendly packaging.

Color & Texture: It is a dull & dark reddish coloured thick, not so finely ground paste.

Aroma: It has a grassy sweet+spicy aroma.

Flavour: It tastes strongly tangy & mildly spicy.

Ingredients Analysis:

Tomato – Tomatoes are the major dietary source of the antioxidant lycopene, which has been linked to many health benefits, including reduced risk of heart disease and cancer. They are also a great source of vitamin C, potassium, folate and vitamin K.

Jaggery – It acts as a detox, as it helps cleanse the liver by flushing out nasty toxins from the body. Jaggery is loaded with antioxidants and minerals like zinc and selenium, which help prevent free-radicals (responsible for early ageing). It helps boost resistance against infections, hence building stronger immunity.

Onion – The phytochemicals in onions that scavenge free radicals may also reduce your risk of developing gastric ulcers, according to the National Onion Association. The chromium in onions assists in regulating blood sugar. The sulfur in onions helps lower blood sugar by triggering increased insulin production.

Pumpkin – Eating pumpkin is good for the heart. The fiber, potassium, and vitamin C content in pumpkin all support heart health. Studies suggest that consuming enough potassiummay be almost as important as decreasing sodium intake for the treatment of hypertension, or high blood pressure.

Garlic – The combined effects on reducing cholesterol and blood pressure, as well as the antioxidant properties, may reduce the risk of common brain diseases like Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Garlic contains antioxidants that protect against cell damage and aging.

Cinnamon – It is loaded with antioxidants, anti inflammatory properties, helps fight bacterial & fungal infections, cuts the risk of heart disease & cancer, improves sensitivity to harmony insulin, lowers blood sugar level and has beneficial effects in neurogenenrative disease.

Ginger – It has antioxidant & anti inflammatory properties and helps with digestion, nausea, cold & flu relief, pain reduction, inflammation & cardiovascular health.

Red chilli powder – The capsaicin compound found in chili powder revives metabolism, vitamin C acts as an antioxidant to strengthen the immune system and heal injuries and infections. FYI, as per ayurveda, green chilli is preferred over red chilli powder.

Black pepper –  Black pepper is known to have a great amount of antioxidant properties. It also has benefits against bacterial growth, particularly in the intestinal tract and enhances digestion.

Salt – Specifics of the same as to if it is Himalayan salt, rock salt or refined salt isn’t mentioned.

Vinegar – Specifics of the same have not been mentioned.

This ketchup is free of any additives like added colors, aroma, thickener, emulsifier or preservative. Vinegar & salt act as natural preservatives.

Efficiency: Unlike the commercial ketchups that have an almost fine flowy paste like consistency, this one’s texture being quite coarse and not flowy, it requires force to bring out the content from the narrow bottle towards the later part. I felt a broader mouth jar facilitating a spoon insertion would have been better. Again, unlike the commercial ones, it doesn’t have a fancy overpowering taste. It tastes like a fresh home made ketchup though the texture is somewhere between a ketchup & chutney. It is tangy sweet with rich spices. The sweetness & spices are in the right proportion and tastes neither strong nor subtle. Since the shelf life is 8 months, I guess more quantity of the vinegar is used and the taste of the same is felt, which I’m not a fan of.

I Say Organic has outlets and online presence that delivers in Delhi. For other places in India, a minimum purchase amount is required along with additional courier charges.

Pros:

  • Tastes like home made ketchup
  • Eco friendly packaging
  • No undesirable additives
  • No added colors & fragrance
  • No emulsifiers & thickeners
  • No harmful preservatives
  • organic

Cons:

  • specifics of salt & vinegar aren’t mentioned
  • availability

NATUROID’s Verdict – This is definitely one of the healthiest readymade ketchup without any harmful additives available out there. Go for it!
